MISSION STATEMENT
We offer support and encouragement in living, social and
practical skills to enable people with learning and physical
disabilities to enjoy independent lifestyles.
What we do
ENABLE (SHEFFIELD) is a training organisation for people with
disabilities. Our aim is to offer a quality care and training service to
meet the individual needs and choices of disabled people. Our training
programmes are specially selected to suit our learners and are delivered
in-house by qualified staff. Our learners come from all over Sheffield.
ENABLE (SHEFFIELD) first opened for business in 1994 with the intention
to make a difference to the lives of people with disabilities in
Sheffield. From the start, we have involved our learners in the decision
making this, we believe, is the key to our success.
We have grown from a
grass roots organisation, renting one room in a local school where our
learners recycled toys, to become a recognised training provider for
disabled adults.
Opening hours
We are open Monday to Friday 9.00 am - 4.00 pm. We close for
6 weeks each year:
1 week Spring Bank Holiday
2 weeks Summer Break
1
week Working Together Week
2 weeks at Christmas
In addition, we close 13
days each year for staff training and public holidays. We produce a
holiday/staff training list during January of each year and a copy of
this is sent to parents and carers.
Our centre
The premises at 33
Harborough Avenue are bright and spacious. The centre has been designed
specifically to meet the demands of disabled people and our training
rooms are well equipped and are resourced to meet needs of our learners.
The garden area has been developed to ensure our disabled learners can
work and learn in this area.
How we are managed
Board of Directors The governance of ENABLE
(SHEFFIELD) is through a Management Group of 10 people as required by
our Constitution. The group meet bi-monthly to debate and decide finance
and policy issues. The Manager is invited to attend to give information
of the current operational work.
Daily Management The General Manager is
responsible for the day to day management of ENABLE (SHEFFIELD). He
identifies our funding needs and makes appropriate applications. He
ensures observance of the systems, policies and procedures and for
reviewing them annually.
Snacks and lunches
Lunches and snacks are
available for learners each day. Learners are given a copy of the menu a
month in advance and lunches should be ordered in advance.
There are
also two tea breaks during the day. The morning one is between 9.00am
and 10.00am when hot drinks and toast is available. The afternoon break
is between 3.00pm and 3.30pm and again hot drinks and snacks are
available.
Working Together Week We close for one week during the summer
months when we take learners who choose to go with us on our Working
Together Week. We change the destination each year and arrange meetings
with parents and carers early in the year to discuss our plans and the
costs. We then encourage learners to save toward the cost in our holiday
banking system. A contract of responsibility is completed, in advance of
going, between the parent or carer and ENABLE (SHEFFIELD).
